i could watch these three minutes over and over, again and again...

D~….I saw the title of your blog and in a flash Roy Batty was in me gulliver :)
thanks for that snippet from one of my favorite movies!!!!!

Ridley Scott was interviewed in Wired magazine on the movie's 25th anniversary, he said that particular monologue was not scripted, Rutger Hauer just improvised it.

(Frequency Holder: “May the schwarz be with you!!!” :)

Ah yes, one of my favorite moments in cinema as well!  Eric stole my thunder though! I was going to tell you that moment was improvised. ;oP

Actually, if you ever want to read an absolutely fascinating book, read Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner by Paul M. Sammon.

I am a bit of a geek with this movie.  Before it was (fairly) common knowledge, I had figured out the answer to the question of “Is Deckard a Replicant himself, or not?”  I've seen all but two of the cuts of the film, and actually, I met one of my dearest friends and colleagues due to a conversation he overheard me having about Blade Runner.  When he overheard what I was saying, he interjected with, “Yeah, it was pretty amazing sitting in on the dailies.”

I totally geeked out.

ahh…i see this post is becoming a gathering of the geekminded (myself included, naturally)…

dailies?!!?! of Blade Runner?!!? Way cool!!! :)

and fear not, darshan! no thunder has been stolen. (although, i did not realize it was the 25th anniversary, eric. sweet! thanks for the heads up. and given that, i suppose this post is quite apropos, then. superb!)

yes, lads, i too am well-informed of the amazing improvisational performance of RH. i was raised by a cinematic geek (aka “Toonces”, yet still known to me as “Dad”), who at one time had a collection of 1000+ laser discs and likely has close to 2000+ DVDs (…all categorized and alphabetized, of course), and who taught me how to look for a boom in the shot at the ripe old age of 8! (LOL!) ;)

here's a linky-poo to one of a six-part documentary on the making of Blade Runner. around minute 7, is the description by both Ridley and Hauer about those famous two lines and how this great film scene came to be.

enjoy!

(and yes, dave…”I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former room-mate.

Let us not forget Rutger's other contribution.  He is singularly responsible for bringing bicycle shorts into fashion.  A trend Milli Vanilli carried on after him.

“Girl you know it's true…OOH, OOH, OOOOOOH…”

And being a soundman I rely on my good comrades, cameramen, to protect the frame.  I of course have never dipped my boom into frame.  CHUH!  Yeah right?   That's what wireless mics are for…Good soundmen are heard but never seen.

Thank you Ms. D for posting the documentary link!  I freaked when I actually got to see the old footage of Holden in the hospital room.  Read about it, had never seen it (I would have had to have been in the audience for the San Diego test screening), and now I can rest knowing that I have seen it.  Thank god they did cut it…

Yeah, my buddy worked on the visual effects camera unit, and he has worked with Doug Trumbull on both Close Encounters and Blade Runner.  Somewhere he still has a piece of the Hades set amongst his things.  They shot the visual effects in 65 MM, so apparently sitting in on those dailies was really amazing.  I'm lucky in the fact that I have seen the only 70 MM print in existence, and I saw it at the Cinerama dome in Hollywood.  Too cool!

Have you ever found the Millenium Falcon in the Spinner fly over shot?  It's there if you look carefully.

Glad to know you are as geeky as us guys!  :oD
